Last-minute efforts are underway at various levels in Yemen to save the life of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who is facing execution on July 16 in connection with the 2017 murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi
A last-minute intervention by , prominent Muslim leader and general secretary of the All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar has sparked hope for Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya who is scheduled to be executed by the Yemeni government on July 16.
Aboobacker Musaliyar reportedly approached prominent Yemeni Sufi scholar Habib Omar bin Hafiz in a last-ditch effort to seek a reprieve for Nimisha.
Musaliyar has urged the Sufi scholar in Yemen to hold discussions with the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the victim in the case. Following the request of Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliar, the Yemeni Sufi scholar has started discussions with the family of Talal
It has been reported that discussions to save the life of Nimisha life are at a crucial stage. In the discussions held in North Yemen on , was attended by Sheikh Habib Omar’s representative Habib Abdurrahman Ali Mashhoor, Yemeni government representatives, the Supreme Judge of the Criminal Court, Talal’s brother, and tribal leaders. The proposal in the discussion is that Talal’s family should accept blood money and pardon Nimisha Priya.

Nimisha Priya , a native of Palakkad in Kerala, was convicted for murdering Yemeni citizen Talal Abido Mehdi and handed out death sentence by a local court in Yemen in June 2018. The death sentence issued by the trial court was upheld by the Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. Nimisha had worked as a nurse in Yemen for several years until she was accused of murder in 2017. With Talal’s support, Nimish ran a clinic in Yemen, but she allegedly faced mental, physical and financial abuse, which culminated in the killing
On Monday, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it had done all it could to save Nimisha “The government of India is doing whatever is utmost possible in the matter .Having regard to the sensitivity and status of Yemen as a place, there is nothing much the Government of India can do,” Attorney General R. Venkataramani told the Supreme Court.
