Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph on Monday sought to downplay the debate over the Congress’ chief ministerial face, stating that such discussions are fueled by the media and that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) remains the ultimate deciding authority.
Speaking to the media in Kannur on Monday, Sunny Joseph asserted that if the Congress-led UDF alliance wins, the decision on who would be Chief Minister would be taken by the AICC and that it would be accepted by all in the party.
Responding to questions on an advertisement in an English daily reportedly highlighting senior leader Ramesh Chennithala, he said he had not noticed the advertisement, effectively avoiding a direct confrontation with the Chennithala camp.
The advertisement in question was a full-page pictorial feature published in prominent English daily on Sunday. It highlighted Ramesh Chennithala’s long political journey, characterized by his grassroots origins in the Kerala Students Union (KSU) rather than an “overnight” rise. It highlighted Chennithala’s career and performance, often described as a mosaic of diverse responsibilities, including his role as KPCC president, MLA, minister, and Opposition leader.
Coming as it does days after the KPCC issued a gag order against promoting specific leaders for the Chief Minister’s post the move was seen by many as a direct challenge to the party’s official discipline.
Meanwhile, former KPCC President V M Sudheeran on Monday said the usual practice in the party is to choose the Chief Minister from the MLAs.
Speaking to the media here, he said the current Chief Ministerial discussions are irrelevant. The high command will take an appropriate decision on the matter.
