Kovind pays tribute to India’s first President Rajendra Prasad

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday paid floral tribute to Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on his 133rd birth anniversary, a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.

“The President, family members of Rajendra Prasad as well as officers and staff of the President’s secretariat, paid floral tributes before a portrait of Rajendra Prasad in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan,” it said.

Rajendra Prasad was born in Bihar on 3 December, 1884.

A lawyer by training and a Gandhian, Prasad joined the Indian National Congress during the Indian Independence struggle and was was imprisoned by British authorities during the Salt Satyagraha of 1931 and the Quit India movement of 1942.

After Independence, Prasad was elected its first President by the Constituent Assembly served as President of the Constituent Assembly. He was elected President in 1952 and served till 1962.
