The LDF government in Kerala has sent a letter to the Centre, demanding that no further steps be taken in the implementation of the PM SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) scheme.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the cabinet on Wednesday that the government has sent a letter to the Centre, urging it to halt further action on the implementation of the PM SHRI scheme in the state. Earlier, CPI ministers K Rajan and P Prasad had called on the Chief Minister and expressed their party’s dissatisfaction over the delay in sending the letter. Following this, the letter was dispatched to the Centre.

On October 29, the LDF government in Kerala decided to withdraw from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the state government and the central government regarding the implementation of the PM SHRI scheme in state schools, yielding to pressure from the CPI. Despite the cabinet’s decision, the Education Department reportedly delayed in sending the letter to the Centre requesting it to halt further steps under the scheme. The CPI expressed displeasure over the delay despite a cabinet decision already having been made. CPI ministers K Rajan and P Prasad met the Chief Minister on Wednesday and expressed their dissatisfaction. The letter was subsequently sent to the Centre.

Despite the CPI’s strong opposition, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to join the Union government’s PM SHRI scheme on October 22.

The MoU was signed on October 22 in New Delhi by Kerala’s General Education Secretary, J Vasuki, and the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
