The Kerala Police have registered a case against a man for allegedly posting a comment on social media describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “traitor”.

The Sreekandapuram police in Kannur district registered the case against Rajan C. Kottoor, a resident of Kottoor near Irikkur, on Friday following a complaint lodged by Sanju Krishnakumar, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party Irikkur Assembly constituency unit.

According to the complaint, Rajan C. Kottoor allegedly defamed the Prime Minister by describing him as a “traitor” in a Facebook post on March 3.

The case has been registered under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act. These provisions relate to giving provocation with intent to cause a riot and causing public nuisance, respectively.

Police officials said the investigation began on Friday evening after receiving the complaint from the BJP activist. Authorities are expected to interrogate Rajan C. Kottoor and trace the electronic device used to post the comment.
