Vatakara DySP Umesh A, who was accused of sexually exploiting a woman detained for immoral trafficking while he was serving as Circle Inspector at the Vadakkenchery police station in 2014, has been suspended.

The Home Department’s action follows a report submitted by State Police Chief Ravada A Chandrasekhar detailing findings related to the suspected suicide of Binu Thomas, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Cherpulassery police station. Thomas was found dead in the Cherpulassery police quarters on November 15.

The special report by the State Police Chief stated that the “indisciplined, immoral, and illegal activities” of the officer had tarnished the image of the police force.

In his suicide note, Binu Thomas alleged that Umesh sexually exploited the woman—who had been taken into custody for involvement in immoral trafficking—after releasing her without registering a case.

The note also claimed that Umesh accepted bribes from the woman and four men detained with her. Additionally, Binu stated that the DySP had been constantly mentally harassing him. The police had conducted an inquiry into the allegations raised by the deceased officer.
