Close on the heels of a Chennai tourist’s death due to stone-pelting in Srinagar, five Maharashtra legislators had a miraculous escape when terrorists tossed a grenade at their motorcade in Anantnag district of South Kashmir on Wednesday afternoon.

The Maharashtra legislators, who are on an official tour to study the Panchayati Raj system in Kashmir, escaped the attack but 10 civilians were injured as the grenade missed the target.

The grenade attack came when these legislators were driving through the Bijbehara town. They were escorted by personnel from the CRPF and the J&K Police.

These legislators were Vikram Kale and Deepak Chavan (both Nationalist Congress Party), Tukaram Kate and Kishore Patil (Shiv Sena) and Sudhir Parwe (BJP).

The driver of their vehicle sped ahead even after hearing sounds of a tyre burst. When he stopped a few kilometres away, he found two wheels had been hit by bullets. One of the security personnel escorting them reportedly told the legislators that it was a grenade attack.

The security of the Maharashtra legislators was tightened when they reached Srinagar.

Two judges from Karnataka and their families had escaped unhurt in Budgam a few days ago when their vehicle was attacked by stone-pelters when they were on their way to the famous tourist spot of Gulmarg in north Kashmir.
