The NDA delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Hema Malini alleged a “conspiracy” behind the horrendous stampede at actor-turned politician Vijay’s rally at Karur in Tamil Nadu which claimed 41 lives and demanded a thorough probe by a Supreme Court Judge.

An eight-member NDA panel led by MP Hema Malini and comprising Anurag Thakur, Tejaswi Surya, Prajlal, Srikanth Shinde, Abrajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma and Buddha Mahesh Kumar, visited the incident site on Tuesday.

The delegation also met the injured at a local hospital.

Speaking to reporters, panel chief Hema Malini hinted at a “conspiracy behind the incident”, alleging “a power cut” took place during TVK chief Vijay’s September 27 rally at Karur.

The BJP MP said, “Something appears to be fishy, and not natural”.

She was further quoted as saying that had the TVK been allotted an ‘open space’ for Vijay’s rally, the stampede would not have occurred. The question about the stampede is, “who is responsible”, she further asked.

According to Hema Malini, the rally venue could at the maximum accommodate ten thousand people but it is being claimed that more than 30,000 people gathered for the political event.

“Vijay is famous, and it was his responsibility to ensure that not many people came. I have also been told he asked for another place, but was allotted this very narrow space for the campaign,” the BJP MP reportedly said.

Former Union Minister Anurag Thakur called for an impartial inquiry to bring out the truth.

“What were the shortcomings from the organisers? What led to the situation in which fans and followers lost their lives? What was the intelligence department doing here? We want the officials to reply by this weekend. There should be no delay,” he said and made it clear that it is necessary to have a probe by a Supreme Court Judge.

Anurag Thakur also questioned the Tamil Nadu police on the security arrangements made for Vijay’s Karur rally.

“We are going to ask officials questions on Karur stampede,” Thakur said.

A delegation of the Congress party also visited the incident spot and interacted with the families of the victims in Karur and offered their condolences and support.

The delegation included AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal, AICC In-Charge Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar, TNCC president Selvaperunthagai K, CLP leader Rajesh Kumar, Karur MP Jothimani and other senior party leaders.

The TVK, meanwhile, said its functionaries will soon meet the families of Karur stampede victims. This was confirmed by TVK leader Adhav Arjuna.
