Reacting to the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation against MP Farooq Abdullah in connection the JKCA scam, former chief minister Omar Abdullah said he was confident that court would find him innocent.

On Monday, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Abdullah and three others in the multi-crore scam in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

The National Conference said party president Farooq Abdullah had full faith in the judicial system and that he would cooperate with the court’s proceedings in the matter.

In a statement, the NC said, “He (Farooq Abdullah) is certain that truth shall prevail. The rank and file of the party draws inspiration from Farooq Abdullah’s resolve to fight earnestly for the truth to be upheld and continues to fully support him in this endeavour.”

The NC asserted that it was Farooq Abdullah who had sought registration of an FIR into the matter when the allegations of Rs 43.69-crore financial irregularities in JKCA had first surfaced. He was president of the JKCA at that time.

On Monday, the CBI filed the chargesheet against Abdullah and three others in the court of Srinagar’s Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM).

All three accused had been reportedly sent summons to be present in the court on Monday but Abdullah did not turn up. He is currently abroad.

The scam involves payment of Rs 113.67 crore by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for development of cricket facilities in the state. Of this, Rs 43.69 crore was allegedly siphoned off.

The High Court had on 9 March handed over the probe to CBI.
