The Ernakulam Court on Thursday awarded death sentence to Assamese migrant worker Ameerul Islam for raping and murdering 27-year-old Dalit law student Jisha in Kerala last year.

Islam, the 23 year labourer committed the heinous crime in April 2016 after he had a verbal duel with Jisha, whose home he had constructed.

According to reports, the youth had come to her home in the morning of April 28 and they had a fight. He returned in the afternoon when he was drunk and committed the crime.

He then fled to Assam on a train the next day and after laying low for sometime returned to Tamil Nadu to look for a temporary job—from where he was finally arrested in June 2016.

Police zeroed in on Islam after his DNA samples, checked against saliva and blood samples found on Jisha’s body, matched when the results came.

Jisha was found dead on April 28 at her home in Perumbavoor in Ernakulam by her mother Rajeshwari, who works as a casual labourer.

Her body bore injuries in a way that gave rise to suspicions that she was raped before being killed.

The murder attracted national headlines and became a cause celebre in Kerala’s election season.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) said it reflected the slide in law and order that the ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) had allowed, and promised to book the culprits within hours, if elected to power.

State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who assumed office on May 25 promptly appointed ADGP B Sandhya to probe the case and she began her investigation with a rejigged team on May 27.
