The Jharkhand government has approved the creation of a new police sub-division at Mango in East Singhbhum, citing a surge in crime and growing pressure on urban policing.

The move follows growing concern over economic offences, narcotics cases, and other crimes in Mango and adjoining areas of Azadnagar and Olidih. Officials noted that the dense population and expanding jurisdiction of existing police stations had made law enforcement increasingly difficult.

A high-level committee chaired by Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari cleared the proposal of the Home, Jail and Disaster Management Department on Monday. She also directed the Director General of Police to conduct a state-wide assessment of crime patterns and resource gaps to ensure more effective policing across districts.

“This exercise will give us comprehensive data on crime graphs, trends, and the adequacy of current resources, helping us to deploy manpower and infrastructure more effectively,” Tiwari said.

The new Mango police sub-division will be carved out of Jamshedpur (headquarters) and Patamda sub-divisions, bringing Mango, Azadnagar and Olidih under its fold. DGP Anurag Gupta said the restructuring would strengthen efforts to check organised crime in Jamshedpur’s urban belt.

Finance Secretary Prashant Kumar, Personnel Secretary Praveen Toppo, and senior officials from Revenue, Rural Development and Police departments participated in the deliberations before the approval.

Though no political statement accompanied the decision, officials suggested the move reflects the government’s intent to reinforce law and order in fast-growing industrial townships and urbanising areas. With East Singhbhum now hosting three sub-divisions – Jamshedpur, Patamda and Mango. The model may be extended to other districts facing similar urban pressures.
