Rajesh Prajapati, the sub-contractor arrested by the police in connection with the Janakpuri pit death, was informed shortly after the accident that a biker had fallen into the pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), but neither alerted the police nor took any action to rescue him, DCP West Sharad Bhaskar said on Saturday.

Speaking to media persons about the incident, DCP Bhaskar said that an eyewitness named Vipin Singh, who was passing through the area in a car, had seen a motorcycle fall into the pit and informed the guard.

The guard reportedly employed by Prajapati told a worker named Yogesh, who himself saw the victim and the motorcycle. At around 12.22 am, Yogesh called his boss Prajapati about the incident, but the latter didn’t take any action to save the biker.

“During the investigation, we found an eyewitness named Vipin Singh, who had seen a motorcycle fall into the pothole… He informed the guard, who then told the contractor’s worker, Yogesh. Yogesh saw the victims and the motorcycle’s headlight still on. He then informed his boss, Rajesh Prajapati, at 12:22 am. These people knew that someone had fallen into the pit, but they didn’t tell anyone,” the DCP said.

The officer said that the police will arrest all those involved in the case that has sparked massive public outrage. While Prajapati has been arrested, his worker, Yogesh, has been absconding. “We will arrest all the individuals involved in this case. The worker Yogesh has fled the scene; we have deployed teams to catch him,” he said.

According to the police, the postmortem report will come by tomorrow evening. The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani. According to the FIR registered by the police, barricades, warning signs, and reflectors were not installed at the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project site where the accident took place.

The victim, Kamal Dhyani, was returning home late Thursday night when he allegedly rode into an open pit at an ongoing Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project site near the B3B Block in Janakpuri. He was found dead inside the pit on Friday morning.

Kamal, a resident of Kailashpuri, had left his office in Rohini to celebrate his parents’ wedding anniversary but never reached home. According to his friend, he had spoken to Kamal shortly before the incident and was told he was just 15 minutes away.
