Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday recalled the 76th anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar’s historic speech in the Constituent Assembly, where he moved the resolution for the formal adoption of the Draft Constitution of India. Dr Ambedkar was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee for the Constitution of India.

Ramesh took to social media to highlight the significance of the speech, calling it “one of the greatest ever made by anybody anywhere in the 20th century.”

Ramesh quoted Dr Ambedkar’s speech, where he acknowledged the crucial role played by the Congress Party in ensuring the smooth passage of the Constitution.

”During the initial part of his speech, Dr Ambedkar had said this: The task of the Drafting Committee would have been a very difficult one if this Constituent Assembly had been merely a motley crowd… It is because of the discipline of the Congress Party that the Drafting Committee was able to pilot the Constitution in the Assembly in the sure knowledge as to the fate of each article and each amendment,” Ramesh posted on X.

The Congress leader also recalled the alleged ferocious assault on Dr Ambedkar and the Constitution by the RSS, which has continued since its adoption. The Constitution was formally adopted on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950.
