J-K: 3 Army soldiers, 2 policemen killed in ongoing encounter in Kupwara

Five security personnel, including three Army jawans, were on Wednesday killed in the ongoing encounter between security forces and terrorists in the forest area of Halmatpura in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Among the killed were two men of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the J&K Police.

One more terrorist has been killed raising the number of neutralised militants to five. The killed terrorists were Pakistani nationals.

The five security personnel were injured when the operation against terrorists was resumed this morning but they succumbed to their wounds in the hospital. Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia confirmed that three Army soldiers and two policemen have been killed.

Two of the three martyred army personnel have been identified ad Sepoy Ashraf Rather of 160 Territorial Army and Naik Ranjeet Kholka of 5 Bihar.

The two martyred policemen have been identified as Special police Officer (SPO) Mohammad Yousuf Cheche of Kachama and Sergeant Deepak Thesoo of Nagrota (Jammu).

Five unidentified terrorists were killed when the encounter broke out. Bodies of the killed terrorists have been retrieved but their identity could not be established and they are believed to be Pakistanis..

It is believed that the group of terrorists had recently infiltrated through the Line of Control (LOC) and were trapped by the security forces in the forest area of Halmatpura. The encounter started yesterday when contact was established by the Army soldiers with the terrorists hiding in the forest.

Search operations were resumed this morning as the security forces suspected presence of more terrorists there. Men of the Army’s Para Commandos, 41 Rashtriya rifles, CRPF and J&K Police were engaged in flushing out the terrorists from the area.

Reports said that a fierce gun battle was going on between the security forces and terrorists in the area. Reinforcements of Army and CRPF have been rushed there.
