Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday arrived in Hyderabad for his three-day visit to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and review the progress achieved in bilateral relations between the two nations especially in trade, connectivity, banking and energy, officials said.

Rouhani, who was invited by Modi last year, landed at Begumpet Airport in the city at around 5 pm and was received by Union Minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir. Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan, Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali and other officials also welcomed him and other members of Iranian delegation.

Rouhani is scheduled to interact with selected ‘ulema’ or religious scholars of both Shia and Sunni sects, intellectuals, and academicians.

On Friday, he will offer prayers at Makkah Masjid, a 17th-century mosque, located near the historic Charminar in the Muslim-majority old city before proceeding to New Delhi.

This will be the first visit by Rouhani, who is the seventh President of Iran, after taking charge in August 2013.

India and Iran have collaborated on many key projects with the most notable being Chabahar port in southeastern Iran that was inaugurated on December 3, 2017 by Rouhani.

The port bypasses Pakistan, opening up a new strategic transit route between Iran, India and Afghanistan.

“During the forthcoming visit of the President of Iran, both sides would review the progress achieved in bilateral relations and also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest,” the Ministry of External Affairs had said on Wednesday.
