A Delhi court on Wednesday sent Karti Chidambaram to one-day CBI custody in the INX Media money laundering case after the investigative agency told the court that the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s son was being “evasive”.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), however, had sought a 15-day custody in its remand application.

Earlier in the day, Karti was arrested from Chennai airport after he returned from London.

In the Patiala House Court, the CBI said that Karti Chidambaram was being evasive in his replies and made incorrect statements with respect to evidence. Thus, delaying the conclusion of investigation.

Karti said there was a “political vendetta” behind his arrest.

“This is political vendetta,” cried Karti as he was being brought inside the court complex by CBI sleuths.

He expressed confidence that he will eventually be vindicated.

On May 15, 2017, the CBI had registered an FIR against Karti Chidambaram on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, accepting gratification by corrupt or illegal means, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.

Karti Chidambaram allegedly received Rs 3.5 crore from the Mumbai-based INX media, now 9X Media, for helping it get Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance, when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, both accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.

The FIR does not mention Chidambaram senior, though it said he cleared the FIPB approval for Rs 4.62 crore Foreign Direct Investment in the firm at an FIPB meeting on May 18, 2007.
