The Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday alleged that its MP and General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was not given proper treatment after mob attack on Sonarpur, claiming hospitals were given instructions to present the situation lightly.
Speaking to mediapersons in Kolkata, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, “We are not blaming any hospital, but wherever he goes, the same thing is happening. Instructions are being given. In the previous hospital also, a lot of time passed without proper treatment…Then the same instructions are being followed again to present the situation lightly and not show it as serious…”
Ghosh further claimed that the attack on Abhishek Banerjee was “very serious” and that he was “badly injured”.
Banerjee was attacked during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence.
A video of the attack has also gone viral on social media, capturing how the assault on one of the tallest Opposition leaders in the country unfolded.
It shows a group of men hitting Banerjee despite attempts by his security personnel to protect him. Some mediapersons are also seen trying to protect the TMC leader.
The mob also hurled eggs and threw stones at the Diamond Harbour MP, who was seen wearing a helmet.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, Abhishek Banerjee claimed there had been an attempt to kill him and said the matter would be taken to constitutional authorities and the judiciary.
“They wanted to kill me. The entire incident has been recorded on camera. We will inform the High Court and also place the matter before the Governor. I will definitely move court,” he said.
While the TMC has accused the BJP of orchestrating the attack, the saffron party has rejected the allegations.
Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that his party was not involved in the attack. He further suggested that public anger against the TMC could be the reason behind the incident.
