The railway infrastructure in Northeast India has witnessed a dramatic overhaul over the past 12 years, with budgetary support increasing more than five times and several long-pending projects reaching completion, according to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma. Highlighting the scale of change, Sharma said the region’s railway network has moved from chronic funding shortages and fragmented connectivity to a phase of rapid infrastructure expansion backed by record allocations.

One of the biggest drivers of the transformation has been the sharp rise in railway funding for the Northeast.

“Before 2014, if we look at 2009-2014, the average budgetary allocation for the railways in the Northeast was around Rs 2,000 crore. But in 2026-27, the budgetary allocation is Rs 11,486 crore. So you can see that there has been a fivefold growth in the budget. And that is enabling projects to be taken up and completed on time,” Sharma said.

10 key developments in Northeast railways over 12 years

  1. Record rail budget for the region: The railway budget allocation for the Northeast has reached Rs 11,486 crore in 2026-27, compared to an average of around Rs 2,000 crore before 2014.

  2. Major boost to project execution: Enhanced funding has enabled railway projects to be taken up on a larger scale and completed within scheduled timelines.

  3. Complete transformation of railway infrastructure: According to NFR, the region has witnessed a comprehensive upgrade in both railway infrastructure and passenger services.

  4. End of fragmented gauge network: The Northeast no longer depends on a mix of meter-gauge and broad-gauge lines.

  5. Full unigauge railway system achieved: The region now operates entirely on a broad-gauge network, improving seamless rail movement.

  6. 833 route kilometres converted: A total of 833 route kilometres of meter-gauge tracks have been converted to broad gauge.

  7. Improved passenger convenience: Passengers earlier had to change trains while travelling through sections connected by meter-gauge lines. The broad-gauge conversion has removed that hurdle.

  8. Better connectivity across Assam and the Northeast: Rail connectivity has become more integrated with the completion of gauge conversion works.

  9. Faster movement of trains: The shift to a unified broad-gauge network has strengthened operational efficiency and train movement across the region.

  10. Stronger foundation for future expansion: The increased budgetary support has created the framework for sustained railway growth in the Northeast.

New Jalpaiguri creates ticket-checking record

Amid the broader infrastructure push, NFR also recorded a major operational achievement this year.

On June 6, the Ticket Checking Section of New Jalpaiguri (NJP) under Northeast Frontier Railway reported earnings of more than Rs 2.08 crore during May 2026.

According to Sharma, this is the highest monthly ticket-checking revenue ever recorded by any section under Northeast Frontier Railway, marking a new benchmark for the zone.
