Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot be praised for taking action against Pakistan when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi can be for a similar action.

Addressing an election gathering in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader cited the example of how former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, when he was in opposition, hailed Indira Gandhi following India’s major victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

“1971 mein Smt Indira Gandhi ne Pak ko dhool chataya tha, us samay Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji ne sansad mein khade hokar unki prashansa ki thi (In 1971, Indira Gandhi gave Pakistan a bloody nose. At that time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji praised her on the floor of the House),” Singh said.

“If we can praise Indira ji for defeating Pakistan, why can’t we praise Modi ji for teaching Pakistan a lesson?” Singh asked as the crowd raised “Modi-Modi” slogans.

Hitting out at the Congress for asking for proof of the Balakot air strike, Singh said that it is the vultures who count dead bodies.

“Lekin ispe Congress ke logon ko apatti hai aur keh rahe hain ki bataiye kitne logon ko mara hai? Batao, bahadur kabhi lashen ginte hain? Lashen veer nahi ginte, lashen giddh ginte hain (The Congress has an objection (to the airstrike) and they demand to know how many terrorists were killed. Tell me do the brave count the dead bodies? Dead bodies are counted by vultures),” Singh said.

Singh had, at an election rally in Gujarat on the day BJP president Amit Shah filed his nomination, made the same remarks.

The Congress and other opposition parties have been questioning the Indian Air Force (IAF) raid on Balakot which destroyed the main terror training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Praising Prime Minister Modi, Singh said that no one in the world can raise a finger at the integrity of the PM and his ministers.
