Cloudburst Hits Kullu, Delhi-NCR Reels Under Waterlogging, Ganga Crosses Danger Mark in Varanasi


As on August 9, a cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district triggering water level rise  of nearby Barogi Nala. The cloudburst damaged roads and disrupting connectivity in the region. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Delhi-NCR caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion, leaving commuters stranded for hours. In Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, the water level of the Ganga has risen above the danger mark, prompting authorities to issue alerts and evacuate residents from low-lying areas as the situation remains tense.

1) Over 130 flights delayed 

The data from Flightradar showed 135 flights were delayed on Saturday morning. The flight tracking website at 8:30 am showed 15 flights to the Indira Gandhi International Airport were delayed, while 120 outbound flights were also behind schedule.

2) Met department issues Red alert 

India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Delhi, including in North Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, South East Delhi and Central Delhi for very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorm. Waterlogging was witnessed at Panchkuian Marg, Minto Road and Mathura Road following heavy rain, as well as Bharat Mandapam’s Gate no. 7, which was waterlogged in the early hours of Saturday, ANI reported.

For the Delhi NCR area, a red alert has been issued in Ghaziabad, while a yellow alert has been issued in Gautambudhnagar for thunderstorms and lightning.

The weather in Delhi is forecast to remain partly cloudy with light rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature is likely to stay between 32–34°C, while the minimum will be around 24–26°C.

On Saturday, the Met department, through its X handle, predicted moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning at most places in Delhi and NCR. Light to moderate rain, along with light thunderstorms and lightning, is also expected in Gohana, Sonipat, Rohtak, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh, Aurangabad, and nearby areas.

Orange alert for Haryana 

In Haryana, an orange alert has been issued for Palwal, Gurgaon, and Faridabad, warning of moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The IMD has also forecast continued rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, with heavy showers likely in several parts of the state over the next few days. An orange alert has been issued for August 11 and 12 in three districts, while the rest of the state remains under a yellow alert.

 

3) Delhi Rain Live Updates: Building collapse in Jaitpur 

A portion of a building collapsed in Hari Nagar, Jaitpur, South East Delhi amid heavy showers. Delhi Fire Services said two fire engines have been rushed to the spot after receiving the emergency call.

4) Delhi Rain Live Updates: Delhi Airport advises to take alternative routes 

Amid widespread waterlogging in the capital, Delhi Airport has advised passengers to reach early and consider using alternative transport like the Delhi Metro to avoid delays.

“As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, Delhi is currently experiencing inclement weather, including heavy rainfall resulting in waterlogging near the airport. Passengers are advised to plan their travel accordingly and consider alternative modes of transport, such as the Delhi Metro, to avoid delays and ensure timely arrival at the airport,” the advisory of the Delhi Airport said.

5) Cloudburst occurs in Kullu 

A cloudburst occurred in Sharod Nallah, Sub Tehsil Jari, District Kullu at 5.35 pm on August 8. No reports of any loss of life have been received so far. The situation is currently normal, said DDMA Kullu.

6)  Heavy rain lashes several parts of the National Capital

Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi-NCR on Saturday, bringing much-needed respite from the sweltering heat but also causing severe waterlogging and traffic snarls across several parts of the region. Key stretches in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad witnessed slow-moving traffic as commuters struggled through inundated roads.

The downpour also disrupted public transport services, while residents reported power outages in some areas. Weather officials have attributed the showers to active monsoon conditions and forecast more rain over the next 48 hours.

Heavy rains led to widespread waterlogging in several parts of Delhi, disrupting traffic and daily life. Key roads and low-lying areas remained submerged, causing major inconvenience to commuters.

10) Traffic congestion in Delhi/NCR after amid torrential rainfall
