India-South Korea seal strategic defence pact on cybersecurity during Rajnath Singh’s Seoul visit

India and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have taken a major step towards strengthening their strategic defence partnership by signing a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on cybersecurity, defence cooperation and information sharing. The agreement was formalised during Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s official visit to Seoul, reflecting growing alignment between the two countries amid rising security challenges and rapidly evolving digital warfare threats in the Indo-Pacific region.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Rajnath Singh and South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-Back, with both sides underlining the need for closer collaboration in areas linked to cyber defence, military preparedness and intelligence coordination.

The agreement is expected to deepen institutional engagement between New Delhi and Seoul at a time when nations across the region are increasingly prioritising cyber resilience and strategic defence cooperation against emerging technological and security risks.

Agreement focuses on cyber defence, military infra protection

Under the framework of the newly signed pact, India and South Korea will work together on tackling evolving cyber threats, strengthening the protection of sensitive military and digital infrastructure, and improving mechanisms for defence-related information exchange.

The cooperation will also include sharing best practices in digital defence systems and enhancing coordination aimed at improving regional situational awareness and broader security preparedness.

Rajnath Singh pays tribute at Seoul National Cemetery

Ahead of the signing ceremony, Rajnath Singh visited the Seoul National Cemetery, where he paid homage to South Korean servicemen and women who lost their lives in service to the nation, particularly during the Korean War.

The Union Defence Minister laid floral tributes at the memorial site and observed a moment of silence, calling the gesture a reflection of the enduring friendship and historical goodwill shared by India and South Korea.

South Korea visit forms second leg of two-nation tour

Rajnath Singh’s South Korea visit is part of a broader two-nation diplomatic and strategic outreach tour being undertaken from May 18 to May 21.

The first leg of the tour covered Vietnam from May 18 to May 19, where discussions focused on strengthening regional security cooperation and expanding defence engagement in Southeast Asia.

The second leg began with Rajnath Singh’s arrival in Seoul on Tuesday, where he was received by Ambassador of India to the ROK, Gourangalal Das, along with senior officials.

The latest agreement between India and South Korea is being viewed as another significant step in expanding bilateral strategic cooperation, particularly as both countries seek stronger partnerships to address emerging defence and cybersecurity challenges in the Indo-Pacific era.
