Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Micron ATMP (Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging) facility at Sanand in Gujarat, marking the commencement of commercial production and a major step in India’s emergence as a global technology manufacturing hub.

The facility, set up by US-based semiconductor major Micron Technology, represents a significant milestone in India’s journey towards strengthening its position in the global semiconductor and electronics value chain.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that while India had long been recognised globally for software and IT services, the country is now rapidly building a strong identity in the hardware sector as well.

Referring to recent technological advancements, Modi noted that after hosting one of the world’s largest AI summits, the launch of commercial production at the Sanand plant reflects India’s growing technological capability and commitment to innovation-led growth.

Highlighting the speed of execution, he said the Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed in June 2023, followed by the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2023. Installation of machinery at the pilot facility began in February 2024, culminating in the start of commercial production in February 2026.

The Prime Minister emphasised that India has significantly streamlined regulatory procedures, including the clearance of Advanced Pricing Agreements (APAs), which were completed within months—a process that typically takes three to five years in many developed economies.

Describing the project as a symbol of the “New India” mindset, Modi said the transition from policy formulation to production is now taking place at unprecedented speed due to transparent governance and decisive policymaking.

He further underlined that the semiconductor facility reflects deepening strategic cooperation between India and the United States in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and chip manufacturing.

According to him, collaboration between the world’s two largest democracies is also aimed at strengthening secure and resilient global supply chains for critical minerals and advanced technologies.
