India on Sunday summoned Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Syed Ahmed Shah to the foreign office to protest against the neighbouring country’s so-called ‘Gilgit-Baltistan Order, 2018’ to hold on to power in these areas.

“It was clearly conveyed (to the Pakistani side) that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, which also includes the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan’ areas, is an integral part of India by virtue of its accession in 1947. Any action to alter the status of any part of the territory under forcible and illegal occupation of Pakistan has no legal basis whatsoever,’’ the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement, adding the stance of Islamabad was ‘completely unacceptable’ to India.

“Instead of seeking to alter the status of the occupied territories, Pakistan should immediately vacate all areas under its illegal occupation,” the ministry said.

The ‘Gilgit-Baltistan Order, 2018’, which essentially seizes the powers of the Gilgit Baltistan Council and entrusts the Prime Minister of Pakistan with indisputable authority vis-a-vis Gilgit-Baltistan, was officially promulgated on 21 May.

New Delhi said Pakistan’s action could not “hide the illegal occupation of the part of Jammu and Kashmir nor the grave human rights violations, exploitation and denial of freedom to the people residing in Pakistan occupied territories for the past seven decades”.

This was the second time within a week that the Pakistani diplomat had been called to the foreign office. He had been summoned on Wednesday to register India’s protest over the killing of a seven-month-old infant in unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces on 21 May in Bhimber sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
