Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India and Nepal were committed towards stopping the misuse of open borders between the two neighbours.

In a joint statement issued after holding bilateral talks with visiting Nepalese Prime Minister KP Oli, Modi said: “We have strong relations when it comes to the aspect of security and are committed towards stopping misuse of our open borders.”

“We aim at improving waterways and railways with Nepal and today we reviewed the progress in various such connectivity projects,” he added.

Modi informed that the two nations have agreed to work towards a new railway line to connect the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu with India.

“There is a long history of India’s contribution towards Nepal’s development, I have assured PM Oli that this will continue in future,” Modi said.

Oli, in his statement said Nepal attaches great importance to its relations with India as the two nations enjoy age old historical ties and have many things to offer to each other.

Oli also invited Modi to visit Nepal.

Prior to the joint statement, both Modi and Oli inaugurated the India – Nepal petroleum products pipeline.

Earlier in the day, Oli was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Oli along with his wife Radika Shakya and a 54-member high-level delegation arrived on Friday on a three-day state visit.

Oli also met Congress President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed “various dimensions of Nepal-India relations”.
