The National Coordination Centre–Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (NCC-PvPI), under the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), joined 130 partner organisations worldwide in marking the tenth edition of the global MedSafetyWeek campaign, held from November 3 to 9, 2025, according to an official document shared from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

The campaign, themed “Everyone has a role to play in medicines safety”, aimed to raise awareness among patients, families, and healthcare professionals about the importance of reporting suspected side effects of medicines.

Highlighting the importance of vigilance, V Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC, said, “Research indicates that only 5–10 per cent of all suspected side effects are reported globally. This means we only see the tip of the iceberg, and it may take longer to identify important safety issues. Through MedSafetyWeek, we aim to make more people aware that their report matters.”

Echoing this, Jai Prakash, Senior Principal Scientific Officer and Officer-in-Charge, NCC-PvPI, IPC, added, “By reporting suspected side effects, each one of us contributes to making medicines safer for everyone. Speaking up can help protect others. It’s not only doctors, pharmacists, or regulators; everyone has a role to play.”

Throughout the week, NCC-PvPI and its stakeholders—including Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Centres and Market Authorisation Holders—actively promoted the message through social media campaigns and outreach activities across India.

Launched in 2016, MedSafetyWeek is a global initiative coordinated by medicines regulatory authorities to educate the public on why, how, and where to report suspected side effects. “The 2025 edition, marking its tenth anniversary, was the largest yet, engaging 130 organisations across 117 countries and sharing messages in over 60 languages,” the ministry noted.
