India on Monday strongly condemned the disruption of the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto, describing it as a “despicable act” and urging the Canadian government to take necessary steps to protect the religious rights of its people.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it has taken up the matter with Canadian authorities and called for accountability of those responsible.
“We have seen reports regarding the disruption caused by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto. Such despicable acts are regrettable and go against the spirit of the festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and social harmony,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in response to media queries.
“We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable,” he added.
“We hope the Canadian government will take the necessary action to protect the religious rights of the people,” Jaiswal further said.
