Amid the recent easing of trade tensions with Washington, India on Friday reaffirmed its commitment to taking the Indo-US comprehensive global strategic partnership to new heights.
At a media briefing here, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said a trade delegation from the US was in New Delhi earlier this week and held talks with Commerce Ministry officials.
The talks, he said, were positive and forward-looking. The two sides have decided to intensify efforts to conclude a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), the spokesperson added.
The statement comes three days after US President Donald Trump telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and greeted him on his birthday. The conversation between them, described by the two sides as positive, was significant since it came after Trump repeatedly made uncharitable remarks against PM Modi and India, apparently for not giving him credit for the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Asked about reports that the US has revoked the sanctions waiver for the Chabahar Port in Iran, which provides India a direct transport link to Afghanistan, the spokesperson said New Delhi is currently examining its implications for India.
