The INDIA Bloc parties on Monday intensified their attack on the Chief Election Commission, accusing the CEC of misconduct and bias while questioning its decision to conduct a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the state Assembly polls.
Addressing a joint press conference at the Constitution Club of India, the INDIA Bloc leaders, including Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and TMC’s Mahua Moitra, alleged that the EC is facilitating “vote theft” in favour of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
The opposition leaders criticised the EC for not providing clear answers to their concerns and questions, with Gogoi stating that the EC “has not given any answers on people declared dead in electoral rolls.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant accused CEC Gyanesh Kumar of acting like a BJP spokesperson, highlighting the need for an impartial EC.
The meeting was also attended by Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, AAP’s Sanjay Singh, and RJD’s Manoj Jha, among others.
The INDIA bloc is reportedly considering moving an impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, with Congress leader Syed Naseer Hussain reportedly stating that they would use every democratic means available to them if needed. The motion would require a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament.
The controversy began when Rahul Gandhi accused the EC of facilitating “vote theft” in favour of the BJP. The EC has refuted these claims, labeling them baseless and without evidence. The INDIA bloc has been demanding action against the EC, with some leaders even suggesting an impeachment motion against CEC Kumar.
The INDIA bloc leaders said they will continue their protests and efforts to hold the EC accountable. LoP Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra, which began in Bihar on Sunday, will conclude on September 1 after covering over 1,300 km across more than 20 districts in 16 days.
