In light of the security situation, India has advised dependents of Mission and Post officials in Bangladesh to return home as a precautionary step, as per sources. However, the Indian High Commission and Assistant High Commissions in Bangladesh will continue to remain open and fully operational.

As per the advisory, the families of all Indian diplomats posted in Bangladesh must come back citing the deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh. The decision has been taken after a thorough assessment of the current situation in the country.

“As a precautionary measure, we have advised the dependents of our officials in the high commission and posts to return to India considering the security situation”, official sources said.

The move comes weeks before parliamentary elections are to be held in Bangladesh.

Last month, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah twice, after widespread protests in Bangladesh and the brutal murder of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district. He was apprised of India’s strong concerns at the escalating unrest in Bangladesh. His attention was drawn, in particular, to the activities of some extremist elements who had announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka.

India has consistently rejected the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh. The MEA had called it unfortunate that the interim government neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence with India regarding the incidents.

Notably, in a recent report, the Bangladesh interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus revealed that 645 incidents occurred in the year 2025 that affected minority communities and the broader law and order situation in Bangladesh.
