In poll-bound Assam, Amit Shah targets Congress over infiltration, slams Rahul for ‘gamachha’ controversy

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday claimed that demography of several districts of Assam have changed, alleging that the population of infiltrators in the state increased during the 20-year rule of the Congress party.

Addressing an election rally in Dhemaji, Shah urged the people to vote for the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections with a promise to check cross-border infiltration. “Our seven districts Dhubri, Barpeta, Darrang, Morigaon, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, and Goalpara. Today, these districts have become dominated by infiltrators. Within twenty years of Congress rule, these seven districts, which previously had no infiltrator population, now have a population of 64 lakh,” he alleged.

The home minister said that the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government in the state wouls stop the infiltration in the state if elected to power again.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government will do this work, don’t worry. But if you want to stop the infiltrators, then in the upcoming elections, once again, give your support to the BJP. Elect the Bharatiya Janata Party government…,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Shah also attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the New Assam Legislative Assembly Building in Dibrugarh.

Addressing a gathering on the ocassion, he congratulated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and lauded his efforts to make Dibrugarh the second capitals of Assam. “Today the groundbreaking and inauguration of 5 projects costing approximately Rs 825 crores has taken place. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Chief Minister of Assam. He had announced in 2025 that we would make Assam inclusive, and he had declared the decision to make Dibrugarh the second capital of Assam,” he said.

Shah targeted the Congress party over unfilfilled promises, saying, “We have seen Congress governments where many announcements remained just announcements. But Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement, and today the foundation stone of Assam’s second legislative assembly complex on 250 acres has been laid… Today, the residents of Dibrugarh across the whole of India will be considered residents of the capital of Assam.”

Attacks Rahul Gandhi over Gamachha controversy

Amit Shah also launched a scathing attack on Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi over the ‘gamachha’ controversy.

“Across the world, various cultural ‘gamchas’ from Assam and the North-East are symbols of respect for our North-East culture. On 26th January, during the At-Home programme, the President put up North-East ‘gamchas’ for everyone… all the other people who came put on North-East ‘gamchas’, except one person, whose name is Rahul Gandhi… What kind of enmity does he have? Why does he do so much injustice to our North-East people?” he asked.

He further continued, “Rahul Gandhi can do whatever he wants to do. As long as the BJP is in politics, no one can shake the culture of the North-East.”
