IMD issues week-long heavy rain alert for East, Northeast; heatwave to persist in coastal Andhra Pradesh

The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of eastern and northeastern India, while coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to witness heatwave conditions.

India is set to witness two contrasting weather patterns over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the East and Northeast even as heatwave conditions persist along sections of the southeastern coast.

The weather office has forecast widespread heavy rainfall across several eastern and northeastern states over the next week. At the same time, coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to remain under heatwave conditions for the next three days, while hot and humid weather is expected across parts of South India and the eastern coastline.

IMD issues heavy rainfall alerts for East and Northeast

Speaking to ANI, IMD scientist Akhil said eastern and northeastern India will remain the focus of rainfall and thunderstorm activity during the week.

“We anticipate that the primary focus of rainfall and convective activity during the week will be Eastern and Northeastern India, where warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall have been issued for various days. Heavy rainfall warnings are in place for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh over the next 7 days; an ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ warning has been issued for Meghalaya and parts of Bengal for today,” he said.

Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the period, according to the IMD.

Uttarakhand, western Himalayas likely to receive heavy rain

The weather office has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for Uttarakhand from July 15.

Towards the latter part of the week, similar conditions are likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the IMD said.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh under heatwave alert

While much of northern and eastern India prepares for active monsoon conditions, parts of southern and coastal India are expected to experience uncomfortable heat and humidity.

“As for South India and the coastal areas of Eastern India, such as coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Odisha, hot and humid weather conditions are expected over the next 3 to 4 days. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next three days,” Akhil said.

The forecast points to sharply contrasting weather conditions across the country over the week, with monsoon activity intensifying in the East and Northeast while parts of the southeastern coast continue to battle oppressive heat.
