Ending days of uncertainty, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, wife of late senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, on Wednesday consented to a post-mortem examination after receiving assurances of a fair and transparent investigation from the Chandigarh Police and a commitment from the Haryana government to take action against ”erring officials”.
The senior officer was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence in Chandigarh on October 7, but his family had earlier declined consent for an autopsy, demanding accountability and action on the allegations mentioned in his purported ”final note”.
With the deadlock now resolved, the autopsy was conducted at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. The cremation will take place at 4 pm.
In an official statement, Amneet Kumar said, “In view of the assurance extended by the Union Territory Police for conducting a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation and the commitment conveyed by the Government of Haryana to take appropriate action against any erring officials in due course of law, I have consented to the conduct of the post-mortem examination of Late Y Puran Kumar, IPS.”
She further stated, “Considering the evidentiary importance of a timely post-mortem and in the larger interest of justice, I have agreed for the same to be carried out as per prescribed procedure by the constituted Board of Doctors, with the presence of a ballistic expert, under the supervision of a magistrate, and with videography of the entire process to ensure complete transparency.”
Expressing confidence in the authorities, Amneet said, “I have full faith in the judiciary and the police authorities, and I sincerely hope that the investigation will be conducted in a professional, impartial, and time-bound manner so that the truth emerges in accordance with law.”
She also assured her cooperation with the investigating team, urging the media to maintain sensitivity toward the ongoing proceedings. “In view of the ongoing investigation, no further public statement shall be issued at this stage, and I request the media to respect the sensitivity of the matter,” she said.
Family members of the deceased officer reached PGIMER on Wednesday to identify the body and complete the required formalities before the autopsy.
It is worth mentioning that a day earlier, on October 14, the Chandigarh Police had approached a local court seeking directions to the family to allow the post-mortem, following which the court issued a notice to Amneet Kumar to respond on October 15.
ADGP Y Puran Kumar, 52, known for his integrity and decorated service, was found dead at his official residence on October 7. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
