The Indian Air Force (IAF) will be conducting Exercise Gaganshakti from 8 to 22 April with an eye on the two-front threat from Pakistan and China.

The IAF aims to achieve real-time coordination, deployment and employment of air power in a short and intense battle scenario.

Gaganshakti will test the capability of the IAF in a real-time scenario. Reports say that around 3,000 to 4,000 sorties per day will be conducted involving over 1,100 aircraft.

For the first time ever, the IAF will use the Tejas LCA in an operational matrix.

Over 15,000 IAF personnel, including 300 officers, will be part of Gaganshakti, during which IAF will place its entire machinery to validate its concept of operations and war waging capability.

The exercise, to be conducted in two phases – western and northern, will be executed keeping in mind the ‘Joint Operational Doctrine’.

“Joint operations, including CSFO, Airborne Ops, Air Landed Ops and Maritime Ops, have also been planned,” said a release by the Ministry of Defence.

Besides wartime drills, the IAF will also practice various humanitarian assistance and disaster relief drills.

This exercise is aimed at coordinating operations, maintenance and administrative responses to achieve the stated objectives of the IAF, in case of any contingency,” said the release.

Components of the exercise will include inter valley troop transfer, joint operations with Indian Navy and Indian Army, special operations with Garuds, mass casualty evacuation from highway and ALG Operations.
