A Hyderabad woman on Monday took off her mangalsutra in an emotional appeal urging the Supreme Court to hear her plea.
During the hearing of a plea concerning the sale of Sahara India’s properties, the woman told the Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant that prolonged litigation had destroyed her family.
“For fifteen years, we have not been living a life. Our lives have been ruined. Our entire families have been destroyed. We are making this request together, Milord,” she told the Bench.
On this, CJI Surya Kant told her that her matter would be heard during a special hearing next week.
“Next Monday your matter will be heard. This matter has to be heard by a special Bench,” CJI Surya Kant told the woman and asked her to appear online instead of wasting money on travelling.
However, the woman said that she would appear in person as the matter was too important to her.
“No sir, we shall come…. Because our entire family has been destroyed. We are no longer able to provide even food for our children, let alone their education,” the woman said.
The CJI insisted that she should not waste money on travel. “The matter will be decided only after it is heard. The date fixed for hearing is next Monday. But my suggestion to you is that you should not waste money on travelling,” CJI Surya Kant said.
The woman then removed her mangalsutra, saying there was nothing left around her neck now. “Sir, for a woman, nothing is more precious than her mangalsutra. What is left around my neck now, sir?” she said.
Consoling the lady, the CJI reiterated that next week there would be a special Bench that would hear the matter.
“Next week there will be a special Bench. Only this matter will be listed before that special Bench on top of the board. The matter will be heard there…. So, you will get a hearing…,” the CJI added.
