With the improvement in weather conditions, the Chamba district administration has successfully concluded the rescue operation of people stranded in Bharmour during the Manimahesh Yatra.
On Saturday, as many as 64 persons were airlifted to Chamba in four sorties of an Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopter.
All rescued pilgrims were later sent to their respective destinations in Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses free of cost. In addition, two mortal remains were also brought from Bharmour to Chamba.
In total, 588 individuals were airlifted from Bharmour to Chamba over the past two days, marking the completion of one of the largest rescue operations in the district in recent years.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu lauded the tireless efforts of the district administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Chamba Police, Home Guards, NGOs, and local volunteers who worked round the clock to ensure the safe evacuation of pilgrims.
He said that the people of Chamba exemplified the spirit of Atithi Devo Bhava by organizing langars for stranded devotees in Bharmour and along the route to Chamba. The Chief Minister also commended Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who personally led the operation on the ground.
He stated that the Minister reached Bharmour on foot from Chamba and stayed there until the last person was rescued, ensuring the safety and well-being of every stranded pilgrim.
The Chief Minister said this gesture reflects the present state government’s compassionate and humanitarian approach, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the lives of people in distress.
