Illegal mining in Himachal Pradesh has come under tighter scrutiny, with the Industries Department imposing penalties of over Rs 44 lakh in four months.
Himachal Pradesh Industries Director Dr Yunus said that the crackdown, backed by more than 900 inspections across the state, aims to protect environmental balance, safeguard water sources, and prevent revenue loss to the state.
He stressed that illegal mining not only results in unregulated exploitation of mineral resources but also poses serious threats to environmental balance, conservation of water sources, and protection of public infrastructure. Recognising these challenges, the department has launched coordinated efforts involving policy reforms, intensive monitoring, and prompt enforcement action.
To tackle illegal mining in Himachal Pradesh, the Industries Department has implemented several concrete and strategic measures.
The Geological Wing of the department plays a key role in the scientific management of mineral resources, maintaining mining discipline, and keeping strict vigil over illegal activities.
“Between April and July 2025, departmental field staff carried out over 900 inspections across all districts, including mining-sensitive zones. These inspections also targeted locations flagged by citizens through the Complaint Cell. The campaigns were conducted with the joint participation of local police, administrative officers, and technical experts,” he informed.
During this period, the department registered 895 cases of illegal mining and imposed penalties amounting to over Rs 44,31,500, he said, adding that these actions not only deterred unlawful operations but also safeguarded state revenue. “Legal proceedings have been initiated to ensure offenders face judicial consequences. Furthermore, identified illegal mining sites were promptly shut down, eliminating the possibility of further illegal mining in those areas,” Dr Yunus said.
