In an effort to ensure academic continuity and improve learning outcomes in government schools, the Himachal Pradesh government is considering a policy to prevent teachers from retiring in the middle of an academic session.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Friday announced this while addressing a formal ceremony in Shimla, where appointment letters were handed over to 312 newly selected drawing teachers.
The Chief Minister highlighted that mid-session retirements often cause disruption in classroom teaching, affecting students’ academic progress.
“We are examining the possibility of implementing a system where retirements take place only at the end of the academic year, ensuring that students do not suffer due to sudden vacancies,” he said.
He added that maintaining consistency in teaching staff throughout the session is vital for sustained academic growth and performance.
This announcement comes at a time when the state is witnessing a significant transformation in its education sector.
Over the past two and a half years, Himachal Pradesh has seen a marked improvement in national education rankings, moving from 21st to 5th position.
The Chief Minister credited this progress to the collective efforts of teachers and the education department, emphasizing that strengthening the teaching force further was a top priority for his government.
He also pointed out that apart from appointing over 5,100 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs) across various subjects, the state has initiated a rationalization drive in schools to address imbalanced student-teacher ratios.
“Our aim is to ensure that no child is deprived of education due to the unavailability of qualified teachers,” said Sukhu.
The Chief Minister reiterated that reforms in the education sector were being pursued with a long-term vision, rather than short-term political gains.
He also launched several new initiatives, including a smart attendance system and the Vidya Samiksha Kendra, designed to monitor and improve academic performance.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur also spoke on the occasion and lauded the Chief Minister’s decision to review retirement policies, calling it a progressive step that reflects the government’s commitment to quality education.
