Mumbai woke up to relentless downpours on Monday, leading to widespread waterlogging and bringing traffic to a standstill. Early morning visuals showed railway tracks submerged under water as the heavy rain continued, forcing commuters to wade through flooded streets amid poor visibility.
The Mumbai Traffic Police reported disruptions at multiple key locations. The tunnel from Mankhurd T Junction to Maharashtra Nagar was closed, and railway tracks at Sion and Bandra stations were also affected by waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning for Mumbai to a ‘red alert,’ from the ‘orange alert’ issued on Friday. In response, the Mumbai Police urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
“Mumbai is witnessing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Several areas are experiencing waterlogging and low visibility. Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution if stepping out,” the Mumbai Police warned on X.
Schools, colleges shut due to torrential rains in Mumbai
Heavy rainfall has lashed several parts of Mumbai city on Monday, bringing the traffic to a halt and creating a waterlogging situation in several areas.
Schools and colleges have been shut, several areas are waterlogged and massive traffic jams have been reported as Mumbai and its surrounding areas received heavy rain this morning.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and asked people to avoid stepping out unless necessary.
Heavy rainfall in Nanded
Heavy rains caused by a cloudburst in Mukhed taluka of Nanded district have flooded several villages, leaving many residents stranded and triggering extensive rescue efforts.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted, “Due to heavy rainfall in Mukhed taluka of Nanded district, there has been a significant rise in the water level of the Lendi Dam. Additionally, a large amount of water is flowing in from Latur, Udgir, and Karnataka. Yesterday, the rainfall here was approximately 206 mm. As a result, daily life in Ravangaon, Bhaswadi, Bhingeli, and Hasnal has been affected. In Ravangaon, 225 citizens are trapped in floodwaters, and those in extremely adverse conditions have been evacuated.”
Traffic snarls witnessed in city
The heavy rain slowed down the traffic on Western Express Highway near Vile Parle as heavy rain lashed Mumbai city. Waterlogging was also witnessed in the Gandhi Market Sion area.

The Indian Meteorological Department posted on its X account, highlighting areas that have experienced rainfall in the past few hours.
“During 0830 hrs IST of Yesterday to 0530 hrs IST of today, 18 August, Moderate to Heavy rainfall occurred Moderate to Heavy rainfall over Costal Andhra Pradesh (Vishakhapatnam – 92mm), Costal Maharashtra (Ratnagiri 109 mm, Santacruz 71mm) and Goa (Panjim 69mm) moderate rainfall over Saurashtra & Kutch, coastal & South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Telengana, Rayalaseema, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gengatic west Bengal, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Andaman islands”, IMD said.
Earlier on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) gave a weather forecast for heavy rainfall in Mumbai around 2 am.
IMD posted on its X account, “moderate to heavy rainfall likely over Mumbai and suburban areas during the next 3-4 hours. Refer https://mumbairain.tropmet.res.in.”
Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a flash flood alert for Sunday in Maharashtra’s Konkan, including Mumbai.
