Heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai and adjoining areas on Thursday, leading to mishaps, waterlogging, and traffic snarls at several locations in the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs, with the possibility of extremely heavy showers later on Thursday and until the early hours of Friday.

On Thursday morning, a tree near Churchgate railway station near Nariman Point crashed due to heavy rainfall and fell on parked vehicles nearby, though nobody was injured, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials. The tree crushed a few vehicles as well as several two-wheelers trapped under it. Officials said the incident occurred at around 3 am on Thursday.

Another tree collapsed on Marol Military Road in Andheri East on Thursday, a day after a similar incident on the same stretch left two people injured and damaged multiple vehicles, officials said. The large tree fell on an auto-rickshaw parked on Military Road in Marol, but as no one was inside the vehicle, no injuries were reported, officials said.

Similar incidents of trees falling on roads or vehicles caused traffic disruptions and brought vehicular movement to a halt, officials said.

Another incident of a tree crashing was reported from Thane’s Mira-Bhayander area. The incident took place near the Gold Nest Complex located in Ward Number 10 of Mira-Bhayandar. Later, the police halted traffic on the road and appealed to citizens to move to safe locations.

Mumbai’s suburban local train services were also affected by the heavy downpour. The railway network, spanning the Western, Central and Harbour lines, was running around 10 to 15 minutes behind schedule due to rain and waterlogging on the tracks, railway officials said.

In Andheri East, a 60-year-old resident of Yadav Nagar, identified as Aslam Isak Shaikh, fell into an open stormwater drain on Khairani Road in the Sakinaka area, where repair work on a drainage grill was underway, and lost his life.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 10.45 am within the jurisdiction of the Sakinaka police station while repair work on the stormwater drainage grill was being carried out on Khairani Road. Shaikh, who was passing through the area, fell into the stormwater drain through an open manhole.

In a separate rain-related incident, the Dahisar police rescued an injured man who had become trapped inside a drain after entering it under circumstances that are yet to be confirmed.

According to the police, the control room alerted officers about a man who had fallen into a drain and sustained injuries. A team from the Dahisar police station immediately reached the location and launched a rescue operation.

The man was found trapped near a section of the drain with a strong flow of water, and the police had to cut through an iron mesh that obstructed access before pulling him out safely.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned citizens that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across the city and suburbs on Thursday, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain throughout the night. Occasional gusty winds of 50–60 kmph are also likely, officials said.

According to the latest BMC data, high tide is expected at 1.45 pm and again at 1.31 am on Friday, July 3, while low tide is expected at 7.49 pm and 7.11 am on Friday, July 3. During the 24 hours from 8 am on July 1 to 8 am on Thursday, July 2, 2026, the average rainfall recorded was 172 mm in the city, 189 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 165 mm in the western suburbs of Mumbai city.
