The Allahabad High Court has stayed the proceedings in a case registered against former MP Rewati Raman Singh for allegedly rigging elections and violating the model code of conduct during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The court has sought a reply from the state government and a rejoinder from the petitioner before the next hearing on September 18.
The order was passed on Friday by a single bench of Justice Sameer Jain on the application of Rewati Raman Singh.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sub-Inspector Manish Kumar Rai registered a case on May 25 at Kareli police station against former MP Kunwar Rewati Raman Singh, his driver Chandrashekhar, and about 50 supporters.
It was alleged that on polling day, Rewati Raman Singh stopped his car in front of a polling station and, along with his supporters, urged people to vote in favour of his son, Ujjawal Raman Singh. When the police arrived, his supporters allegedly raised slogans and attempted to obstruct government work.
At the time, a Samajwadi Party flag was seen fluttering on Rewati Raman Singh’s car, and three more party flags were recovered from the vehicle during the search.
After the chargesheet was filed, the trial court took cognisance of the matter and issued summons against Singh.
Revati Raman Singh later moved the High Court seeking quashing of the entire trial proceedings, including the summons order.
Rewati Raman Singh’s son Ujjawal Raman Singh contested the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat on a Congress ticket.
