Alleging that the Congress was not “serious” about its allies in poll-bound Gujarat, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday said that it would be fighting the elections alone.

Speaking to the media, NCP leader Praful Patel said the party wanted to fight the polls in Gujarat with the Congress but got was not taken seriously.

“We wanted to fight the elections (Gujarat) in alliance with Congress and even had discussions with them but they (Congress) weren’t serious and kept on delaying the matter,” he said.

“So, finally we have decided to fight the elections alone… We are confident that we will do much better alone,” he added.

This will be a major setback for the Congress who on Sunday released its first list of 77 candidates for the first phase of Gujarat polls following which clashes broke out between members of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) and Congress workers.

The PAAS, led by Hardik Patel, alleged that despite a deal with the Congress, only two members of the PAAS featured in the Congress’ list of 77 although, the Congress did give tickets to a total of 19 Patidars.

The Gujarat Assembly elections will be held in two phases on December 9 and 14 while the results for the 182-member assembly will be declared on December 18.

The Congress has been out of power in the state for more than two decades.
