Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will on Friday address a mega rally in poll-bound Gujarat’s Surat city on day three of his tour to the southern part of the state, officials said.

The rally is crucial as Surat is home to a sizeable population of Patels, most of whom are traders and were reportedly left disgruntled with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) due to demonetisation and Goods and Service tax (GST).

The Gandhi had scion began the ‘Navsarjan Yatra’ from Jambusar on November 1, where he met locals and spoke at a public rally.

Gandhi, who has been attacking the Narendra Modi government and the BJP over the “Gujarat development model”, has also visited a number of temples, a move being seen by many as an attempt to woo Hindu voters.

As per reports, the Congress is also working hard to strike a deal with Patidar leader Hardik Patel who has vowed to not let the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) return to power in the state.

Patel has already gone public asking his community to not vote for the BJP even if the party fielded his father as a candidate.

Alpesh Thakor, the powerful OBC leader, has already joined the Congress while another popular Dalit Leader, Jignesh Mevani, too has been campaigning against the BJP.

Gujarat will go to the hustings in two phases on December 9 and 14. The results of the elections for the 182-member Gujarat assembly will be declared on December 18.
