Give 6000 cusecs of water to TN: SC to Karnataka

Dismissing Karnataka state assembly&’s resolution, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked it to release 6000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery river to Tamil Nadu every day till the next three days.

The bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit of the apex court further asked the Centre to facilitate a meeting between executive heads of the two states in a bid to reolve the Cauvery impasse.

An aggrieved Karnataka had on Monday sought time till January from the apex court to release more water to Tamil Nadu as it needs the depleting quantity for drinking purpose.

Karnataka had also substantiated its plea with the resolution of the state legislature passed unanimously on September 23, which resolved to use the water in the four reservoirs across the river basin for supplying drinking water to the region.

However, Tamil Nadu too filed a counter affidavit, complaining against Karnataka for not obeying its order to release water for irrigating samba inter-crop.
