Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to deepen the strategic arc between New Delhi and Tel Aviv on Thursday, with defence cooperation, including India’s interest in Israel’s Iron Dome and Iron Beam systems, expected to dominate expanded bilateral talks at the King David Hotel.
The visit is being closely watched as India moves towards what is being described as a landmark strategic partnership to acquire Iron Dome technology, not as a standalone purchase but as a core pillar of its indigenous “Mission Sudarshan Chakra”, also known as Project Kusha. The proposal signals a decisive push to build a multi-layered national air defence grid over the coming years.
Defence cooperation takes centre stage
India and Israel are set to ink a clutch of MoUs during the visit, covering everything from economic ties to security cooperation and diplomatic coordination. The two leaders will also exchange views on pressing regional and global developments before delivering joint statements outlining the outcomes of their talks.
Israel has officially proposed to transfer Iron Dome technology to India under the “Make in India” initiative. As part of India’s evolving air defense architecture, the proposal envisions local production and integration to deal with mortars, short-range rockets, and drone swarms.
Iron Beam adds a laser edge to India’s plans
In addition to Iron Dome, India has shown a strong interest in Israel’s newer Iron Beam system. It is a laser-based platform regarded as a cost-effective, “light-speed” response to low-cost aerial threats.
The suggested partnership seeks to enhance the protection of Indian cities and critical infrastructure with a highly effective defense shield that would work in synergy with long-range systems like the S-400.
The broader objective is to create what officials describe as an “impregnable” national security canopy by 2030.
Strategic partnership under review
Before the expanded meeting, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Netanyahu are scheduled to visit Yad Vashem together. Discussions are expected to include a comprehensive review of the India-Israel Strategic Partnership, with emphasis on trade, science and technology, defence, and people-to-people exchanges.
PM Modi is also scheduled to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog during the visit.
The Prime Minister had on Wednesday received a standing ovation at the Knesset.
