Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit, with India and Japan expected to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductor supply chains, critical minerals and economic security during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.

The visit, Takaichi’s first official trip to India since assuming office, comes as both countries seek to deepen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership and coordinate more closely on regional and global challenges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host the Japanese leader during the July 1-3 visit.

Summit to review strategic partnership

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Annual Summit will provide an opportunity for both sides to review the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation while exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s trip to Tokyo in August 2025 for the previous India-Japan Annual Summit and reflects the shared commitment of both countries to strengthen their long-standing strategic partnership.

Diplomatic sources said discussions are expected to centre on boosting investment and innovation while reinforcing economic resilience. Particular emphasis will be placed on securing supply chains for semiconductors and critical minerals.

AI, clean energy and defence expected to dominate talks

Officials said the two sides are also expected to discuss maritime security, defence technology collaboration and the development of an Industrial Value Chain linking the Bay of Bengal with India’s Northeast.

Takaichi is also scheduled to participate in the India-Japan Business Forum. According to diplomatic sources, the two countries could announce cooperation in artificial intelligence. Discussions may also cover a proposed large-scale green ammonia project in Odisha, expanded biogas cooperation and regional resilience initiatives under POWERR Asia.

A source said the visit is aimed at promoting economic growth through investment and innovation while strengthening cooperation in areas linked to economic security.

Several agreements likely

Expected outcomes include a Joint Statement following the Annual Summit, along with agreements related to energy resilience. Memorandums of Understanding are also likely in sectors such as artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, batteries and critical minerals.

India and Japan elevated their relationship to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan last year laid the roadmap for bilateral cooperation over the coming decade, with priorities including security, trade, investment, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.
