Following the Supreme Court hearing on Sharjeel Imam’s alleged inflammatory speeches, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has maintained that recent reports of individuals from various professional fields being involved in radical activities have raised concerns.
According to a statement on Friday by VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal, ”After the Additional Solicitor General presented excerpts of Sharjeel Imam’s alleged speeches in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the question has arisen in the country as to ‘who should be trusted and who should not be’.”
He alleged that the Imam’s speeches contained serious issues affecting the unity and security of the country.
According to Bansal, “Appeals such as disrupting the connectivity of the northeastern states, creating large-scale blockades, inciting against constitutional institutions, and creating organised unrest cannot be acceptable in any form.”
The spokesperson stated that such statements could pose a threat to public peace, social harmony, and national security. He expressed concern that “if such individuals are released from prison, it could have serious implications for law and order.”
Bansal claimed that the spread of radical ideas misleads youth and promotes antisocial activities in society.
He urged the court to take a strict stance in such cases to prevent any kind of anti-national activity.
Imam, a former student of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, has been in jail since 2020 and faces several charges, including sedition and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The Supreme Court is hearing the matter.
