Four MBBS doctors lost their lives after a speeding car they were travelling in crashed into a stationary DCM truck on the Delhi–Lucknow National Highway in Gajraula town of Amroha district, police said on Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, the DCM truck loaded with foam mattresses was parked along the highway near Atarasi village, just 7 km from Shri Venkateshwara University, when, around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, the car slammed into it at high speed.
The collision was so severe that the front portion of the car became completely stuck inside the truck. A tractor had to be used to pull the vehicles apart, after which police cut through the mangled remains with a gas cutter to retrieve the bodies.
The victims were identified as Dr Arnab Chakraborty (Kolkata), Dr Ayush Sharma (Delhi), Dr Shresth Pancholi (Delhi), and Dr Saptrishi (Tripura). All four were 2020 batch MBBS students who had recently completed their studies and were undergoing internships at Shri Venkateshwara University. They were returning to the campus after attending a party.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing a loud explosion-like sound from the crash and immediately informed the police. The car was found completely crushed, its roof torn off due to the impact.
Identification of the deceased was confirmed through their Aadhaar cards. University officials reached the site shortly after being notified and subsequently informed the families of the victims.
Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Anand said the bodies have been sent to the mortuary. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted once the families arrive.
