In a landmark initiative blending sustainable hospitality with ecological restoration, Forest Hill Resort (FHR), nestled in the scenic Shivalik foothills near Chandigarh, has joined hands with globally recognised ecological restoration organisation Afforestt to undertake an ambitious native rewilding and habitat restoration project.

The initiative aims to restore the natural biodiversity of the region spread across nearly 2,000 acres adjoining the 10,000-acre Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary while creating a tranquil and environmentally responsible hospitality experience for visitors.

According to Devinder Sandhu, Director, Forest Hill Resort, the collaboration reflects a long-term commitment towards preserving the ecological identity of the Chandigarh-Shivalik landscape.

Afforestt Director Gaurav Gurjar described the location as possessing “Maximum Ecological Advantage” due to its rich biodiversity, seasonal water streams and strategic placement within an important wildlife corridor.

He said the restoration process includes ecological audits, soil studies, water movement analysis, removal of invasive species and large-scale plantation of native flora.

The project focuses on reviving the mixed deciduous forests indigenous to the Shivalik foothills. Afforestt Designer Varsha Gurjar said native species such as Jhingan, Phulai, Surteli, Dhavda, Kaim and Khair are being prioritised along with indigenous grasses and shrubs.

The initiative also places strong emphasis on hydrological restoration. Lakes, trench systems and natural irrigation channels are being developed to naturally absorb and store rainwater, aiding groundwater recharge and creating habitats for birds, insects and wildlife.

With more than 60 bird species already thriving in the area, the project is expected to evolve into a lasting ecological legacy and a benchmark for sustainable tourism in the region.
