The Border Security Force (BSF) has strongly refuted Bangladesh’s media reports claiming that two accused in the murder of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi had entered India through the Meghalaya sector.

Inspector General OP Upadhyay, BSF chief in Meghalaya, told ANI that the claims were completely false, fabricated and misleading, adding that there was no evidence to support such assertions. He pointed out that just three days ago, Bangladeshi media had quoted an Inspector General-rank officer stating that no evidence existed to suggest the suspects had crossed into India. Now, contradictory statements are being made by a DIG-level officer, which further exposes the inconsistency in these claims.

Reports had also alleged that the Meghalaya Police had apprehended the two individuals. However, following verification, Meghalaya Police categorically denied any such arrest, the BSF stated.
The BSF clarified that there has been no instance of cross-border movement from the Meghalaya sector and that even the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) has not reported any such incident. “The BGB is a highly professional force, and if any such infiltration had occurred, it would have been detected and reported,” Upadhyay added.

Dismissing the plausibility of the claims, the BSF chief noted that it was unlikely for the accused to have travelled nearly 300 kilometres from Dhaka and crossed into India without detection, given Bangladesh’s extensive CCTV surveillance network and multiple checkpoints.

Therefore, these allegations are not only highly unlikely but also totally false and fabricated, he added.
