The longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, on Tuesday submitted his resignation to Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd) at Lok Bhavan in Patna, marking the end of an era in state politics.

His resignation comes days after he took oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha on April 10.

Earlier today, Nitish Kumar dissolved his Cabinet following a brief but emotional meeting with his colleagues.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with ministers from all departments and senior officials.

During the meeting, Kumar formally informed his colleagues of his decision to resign and return to the Centre as a Rajya Sabha MP.

Nitish Kumar, a cornerstone of Bihar politics, played a pivotal role in the state’s development during his nearly two decades of rule. In the 2025 Assembly elections, Nitish led NDA to a landslide victory and became the Chief Minister for a record 10th term.

Nitish Kumar’s message during last Cabinet meeting

In his last cabinet meeting as Bihar CM, Nitish Kumar told his colleagues that the responsibility of taking Bihar forward “rests upon all of you”.

“You are already working diligently, but now strive to do even better,” Nitish told his cabinet colleagues during the 20-minute cabinet meet.

He acknowledged the collective efforts that had contributed to Bihar’s progress over the years.

Calling it a deeply “emotional moment”, Kumar said, “I am now heading to Delhi, but I will continue to keep a watchful eye on everything from there.”

Expressing his gratitude to his colleagues, he added, “My love and affection for all of you will endure forever.”
